Privacy Policy

Effective March 16, 2026 · Last updated October 26, 2026

Daily.ky ("we", "our", "us") operates the website daily.ky and the Daily.ky mobile app for Android and iOS (together, the "Service"). This privacy policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your choices. Daily.ky is the data controller for the personal data described here, under the Cayman Islands Data Protection Act (2021 Revision).

In short: you don't need an account, and we never ask for your name, email or phone number to use the Service. The only times we see your email address are if you choose to join our email list (Section 1.8) or our Android beta tester group (Section 1.10). We don't sell or share your data, and we don't use ad networks. The app uses your location only if you choose to, and only on the bus and taxi maps (Section 1.9). It does not access your contacts, camera or photos.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Website Usage

When you visit the website, or open a website page inside the app, we collect:

  • IP address and approximate geographic location
  • Browser type, operating system, and device type
  • Pages visited, time spent, and interaction patterns
  • Referring website or source

This data is collected through Google Analytics (GA4), Matomo (an analytics tool we host on our own server; the data is not shared with anyone), and our server logs. See Section 5 for cookies and how to opt out.

1.2 Mobile App: Notifications

The app works without notifications. If you turn them on, we store a record for your device containing:

  • A random device ID: created when you turn notifications on, so the app can update your choices
  • A push token: an address issued by Apple or Google, through Expo, that lets us deliver notifications to your device
  • Your notification choices: which alerts and updates you switched on, your morning update time, any CUC power-outage districts you picked, and whether you want temperatures in °F or °C
  • Device type and app version: Android or iOS, and which version of the app you have
  • Last check-in: when the app last contacted our server, so we can remove devices that are no longer in use

This record is not linked to your name, email or any other personal identifier. We also keep a short log of the notifications we send (which device, which notification, and whether it was delivered) to make sure they arrive. We also count, in total, how many devices have each alert switched on and how many have checked in recently. These counts never include the device ID or push token.

1.3 Mobile App: Crash Reports

If the app crashes or hits an error, it sends a crash report to Sentry, our error-monitoring provider. A report contains the error details, the app version, the device model and operating system version. Crash reports do not include your IP address, are not linked to your name or any account, and are not used to track how you use the app.

1.4 Mobile App: Usage Counts

When the app loads information from our server or you tap a story or notification, the server keeps daily totals, such as how many times the app was opened, which screens and home-screen sections were viewed, how many times news stories and notifications were tapped (and which news outlet or type of alert they were), and which app versions and phone types (Android or iOS) are in use. To estimate how many people used the app each day, the server turns each connection's IP address into a code using a key that changes every day; the codes are deleted at the end of the day and only the totals are kept. We do not store IP addresses for this, and the totals cannot identify you. These totals are not linked to your device ID or to you. Website pages opened inside the app are labelled as app visits in our website analytics (Section 5).

1.5 Mobile App: Install Count

To count how many phones have the app, including phones with notifications turned off, the app contacts our server once a day when you open it and sends:

  • A random install ID: created by our server the first time the app is opened and kept by the app
  • Device type and app version: Android or iOS, which build of the app you have and when its latest update was published

We keep this with the date the app was first and last opened. It is not linked to your notification record (Section 1.2), your name, email or any other personal identifier, and we do not store your IP address with it. We use it only to count installs and see which app versions are in use.

1.6 Mobile App: Stored on Your Device

Some settings are kept only on your phone and are never sent to us: your pinned tools, recently read guides, light or dark appearance, and whether you have completed the welcome tour. Deleting the app removes them.

1.7 Information You Provide

If you contact us by email or through a form, we collect the information you include in your message (such as your email address and the content of your enquiry).

1.8 Email List

If you sign up on our website to hear when the iPhone app launches, we keep your email address, the page you signed up on, the date, and the wording you agreed to. We do not store your IP address or ask for your name. We use your email only to tell you when the iPhone app is ready and, occasionally, to share Daily.ky app news. We never sell it or share it with advertisers.

The list is kept on our own server. We don't send email from it ourselves: when it's time to send, we will use an email service to deliver the messages and will name it in Section 6 before the first one goes out. Every email will include a link to unsubscribe. You can also ask us to remove you at any time by emailing the address below.

1.9 Mobile App: Location (Bus and Taxi Maps Only)

The app uses your location only to make the bus and taxi maps more useful, and only if you choose to. It never asks for your location when you open the app, and it never uses it anywhere else in the app, for notifications, for advertising or for analytics.

  • When it's used: only after you tap "Use my location" or the locate button on the bus or taxi map. Your phone asks for your permission the first time. The app reads your location only while that map is open on your screen, never in the background.
  • Bus map: finding the bus routes near you happens on your phone. Your location is not sent to us.
  • Taxi map: if you use your current location as the pickup point, the app sends the pickup and destination points to our server so it can measure the road distance and work out the regulated fare. Our server asks a mapping service (Google, or OpenStreetMap's routing service as a backup) for the route between those two points. We don't keep your location: it isn't saved, isn't linked to your device ID, install ID or anything else about you, and isn't written to our server logs. We only keep route results for trips between two places on our public list (such as the airport and a hotel), never for a route that starts or ends at your location.
  • The map itself: on Android the map is provided by Google Maps. Google receives what it needs to show the map, such as the map area being viewed and your device's network address, under Google's privacy policy (Section 6). If you allow location, your position is shown on the map using your phone's own location service.
  • Turning it off: you can stop the app using your location at any time in your phone's settings (Apps, Daily.ky, Permissions, Location). The bus and taxi maps still work: you can search for a place or pick one on the map instead.

When you search for a place on the bus or taxi map, what you type is sent to our server, which may pass it to Google to find matching places. Like your location, searches are not stored or linked to you.

1.10 Android Beta Testers (Google Group)

To test the Android app before its public launch, you join our tester group on Google Groups with your Google account, then opt in on Google Play. As the group's managers, we can see the name and email address on the Google account you join with. We use them only to run the beta: to let you into the test on Google Play and to send occasional updates about the beta to the group, such as what's new and how to install or update the app. We never sell them, share them with advertisers, or add you to any other list. If you ask us on the beta page to add you by email instead, we store that address only to add you to the test, and delete it once you're added or if you ask us to.

Google Groups and Google Play are run by Google, so Google's privacy policy also applies to them (Section 6). You can leave the test at any time: leave the group on Google Groups, or opt out on the app's testing page in Google Play. When the beta ends we will remove the group's members.

2. How We Use Information

  • Providing and improving our news, cost-of-living tools, and data services
  • Delivering the notifications you have chosen
  • Showing nearby bus routes and taxi routes and fares, if you choose to share your location on those maps
  • Finding and fixing errors in the app
  • Analysing usage patterns to improve the Service
  • Emailing you about the iPhone app launch and app news, if you joined our email list
  • Running the Android beta and sending beta updates to testers who joined the tester group
  • Responding to enquiries and support requests
  • Detecting and preventing misuse of the Service

We do not sell personal data, and we do not use it for targeted advertising.

3. Data We Collect From Third-Party Sources

Daily.ky collects publicly available information to power its tools and indexes, such as supermarket and liquor store prices, rental listings, fuel prices, news headlines, government and police press releases, cruise ship schedules, flight information, weather data, and videos from local YouTube channels.

This is factual, publicly available information. We do not collect personal data about individuals from these sources.

4. Advertising

Daily.ky may display advertisements from local businesses. We sell and serve these advertisements ourselves. They are not targeted using your browsing behaviour or personal data, and we do not use third-party ad networks or programmatic advertising platforms. We may count how many times an advertisement is shown or tapped, in total, to report results to advertisers. These counts are not linked to you. We may also share totals with advertisers and with the news organisations we link to, such as how many people opened the app, viewed a section, received an alert or tapped through to their stories. These are always totals, never information about any individual.

5. Cookies and Tracking Technologies

On the website (including website pages opened inside the app) we use cookies and similar technologies for:

  • Analytics: Google Analytics (GA4) and Matomo help us understand how visitors use the Service
  • Functionality: remembering your preferences and settings
  • Performance: caching and optimising content delivery

You can accept or decline analytics cookies using the cookie banner. If you decline, Google Analytics stops using cookies, and Matomo counts visits without cookies. Inside the app, website pages always count visits without cookies, so no banner is shown. You can also block cookies in your browser settings; the core Service will continue to work.

The app itself contains no advertising or analytics trackers. When you open a website page inside the app, our website analytics record it as an app visit, so we can tell app and web use apart.

6. Third-Party Services

  • Google Analytics (GA4): website usage analytics. Google Privacy Policy
  • Expo: passes notifications from our server to Apple and Google. Expo Privacy Policy
  • Firebase Cloud Messaging: notification delivery on Android. Firebase Privacy
  • Apple Push Notification service: notification delivery on iOS. Apple Privacy Policy
  • Google Groups and Google Play: the Android beta tester group and test sign-up. Google Privacy Policy
  • Google Maps Platform: the map, place search and route distances on our taxi calculator and bus map, on the website and in the app. On the website these requests go from your browser to Google; in the app, place search and routes go through our server. Google Privacy Policy
  • OpenStreetMap: a backup map and route service for the taxi calculator and bus map, used if Google's service isn't available. OpenStreetMap Foundation Privacy Policy
  • Sentry: app crash and error reports. Sentry Privacy Policy
  • YouTube: videos on the Media tab open in YouTube, where Google's terms and privacy policy apply. Google Privacy Policy

7. Data Retention

  • Notification records: deleted as soon as you turn notifications off in the app, when Apple or Google tell us the push token no longer works (for example, after you delete the app), or after 90 days without the app checking in
  • Install count records: deleted after 90 days without the app being opened (deleting the app stops it being opened)
  • Crash reports: kept by Sentry for up to 90 days
  • Analytics data: kept for up to 14 months in Google Analytics; Matomo data stays on our own server
  • Location: not kept. Pickup points and place searches from the bus and taxi maps are used to answer that one request and are not saved or logged
  • Server logs: kept for up to 90 days
  • Email list: kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove you, then deleted
  • Beta tester group: kept until you leave the group or the beta ends, when we remove the members
  • Contact enquiries: kept for as long as necessary to resolve your enquiry

8. Data Security

We implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your information, including HTTPS encryption for all data in transit, secure server infrastructure, and access controls. Each app's notification record can only be changed with a secret key held by that app. However, no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure.

9. Children's Privacy

The Service is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

10. International Transfers

Daily.ky is operated from the Cayman Islands. Some of our service providers (including Google, Expo and Sentry) process data in the United States and other countries. We use only providers that protect data to a standard appropriate under the Data Protection Act.

11. Your Rights

Under the Data Protection Act, you have the right to:

  • Ask whether we hold personal data about you, and request a copy
  • Ask us to correct inaccurate data
  • Ask us to delete your data, or to stop processing it
  • Complain to the Office of the Ombudsman, which oversees data protection in the Cayman Islands

You can also act directly:

  • Delete your Daily.ky app data: in the Daily.ky app, open Settings, then Alerts, and turn notifications off (or delete the app). This deletes your notification record from our server: the app's random device ID, your push token and your alert choices. If you delete the app, its random install ID (Section 1.5) is deleted after 90 days. Nothing else we hold from the app identifies you. Daily usage totals contain no personal data and are kept; crash reports are deleted by Sentry after 90 days; server logs after 90 days. To ask us to delete anything else, email us at the address below.
  • Analytics: decline cookies in the cookie banner, or install the Google Analytics Opt-out Add-on
  • Email list: use the unsubscribe link in any email, or email us to be removed
  • Beta tester group: leave the group on Google Groups at any time, or email us and we'll remove you
  • Notifications: switch any of them off at any time in the app or your phone's settings
  • Location: turn off the app's location permission at any time in your phone's settings; the bus and taxi maps keep working without it

To make a request, email us at the address below. We will respond within 30 days.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Material changes will be noted by updating the "Last updated" date. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
